Free Traffic Versus Paid Traffic

free trafficI have Been in the IM(internet marketing) world for many years and what I have discovered is that Free traffic is always better than paid traffic. Sounds obvious RIGHT? Most people don’t know the difference between the two, or how and when to use them.  Well I can tell you there are pros and cons to both types of traffic.


Free Traffic

First lets look at free traffic. Free traffic is great because the earning potential is limitless. You can make money on the internet with no expenses. The bad part is that free traffic takes a lot of time and a lot of work.

Free traffic can be accomplished in many ways. First off getting ranked on google takes less work than other methods but can take time. Using SEO(future post) properly and focusing on the right keywords and content can boost your website in short amounts of time. I recommend everyone learn at least the basics of SEO so you understand how it works and how to get ranked on Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

Post On Social Media

Other free methods include posting videos on your Youtube channel that have reviews or testimonials about the products you are selling. Be sure that you have links to your website from your channel. You can also link your Snapchat, Twitter, and Linkedin accounts to your website.

The more links you have to your site, the higher it will get ranked. Facebook is also a great way to help your ranking. Start a Facebook page and put reviews on it, or start a journal page and posts how things are progressing on a daily basis.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy backlinks.  You do not always know where the links you purchase are coming from.  The search engines look at sites that link to yours.  If they see a huge spike in links, or the sites that link to yours are not relevant, or if those sites seem spammy it will affect your sites ranking.  The search engines may even ban your site if they feel you are trying to game the system.

Another way to get free website traffic is to post on other peoples blogs, or Facebook groups. Be careful with this strategy, some groups will not allow links in their posts. But if you do a web search for groups related to your website there are sure to be a lot of them.

When you post to groups be sure to start with 4 or 5 posts that are informative and ask questions without promoting your product. Ask questions in the groups. You want people to be engaged and get people to like your comments without being a seller.

After 4 or 5 posts then you can slide a link in possibly by saying “hey I saw this product. Wondering if anybody saw this and has an opinion.” be sure not to look like all you are doing is trying to sell something.  Do Not Spam.

Quora is also a great resource. But same as above start out just asking questions and answering questions without advertising. Some groups allow you to have a signature in your responses. If that is the case Make your signature be a link to your website. This can be very effective in bringing people to your website. Again, I wouldn’t do this until after you have gotten lots of likes and potentially people following you.

You can also place free ads on websites. Some free websites include,, and Some websites have stricter policies than others for what type of ads they allow. You will have to check out each one for yourself.

Paid Traffic

Paid Traffic can be an effective tool for marketing. Obviously it can be almost instant traffic, but there is a cost. Google Adwords, Bing, and Yahoo are considered CPC(cost per click) or PPC(pay per click) advertising. You can place ads on these and pay for each person that clicks on your ad.

If you have not used CPC advertising please see my post on how to get your website approved by Google Adwords. The problem with this type of advertising is that people may not have been searching for it but found the ad interesting. This is called cold traffic. Which means you have to warm them up before they will be willing to buy. A very persuasive and well-thought-out website is imperative if you want to get sales from CPC advertising.

There are also many companies out there that will send visitors directly to your site. You can pay a set amount and they will send a certain number of visitors to your site. They have networks of websites and places they can direct people from.

They try to send targeted traffic to your site, but even these people may not be ready to buy. You will still have to warm them up to get them willing to buy.  If you are using this type of method I would suggest only using this to collect their emails in your list.

This method does not usually amount to many sales, but for building lists it can be quite effective.  As we all know, the money is in the list.

Craigslist is another option. Last time I checked it was only $5 to place an ad. If you use Craigslist I would recommend starting with $35 and placing your ad every day for a week to have an ad on the top of the list and see how it works. All the paid advertising methods are really all about testing to see which works best for your situation.

Paid traffic is much more difficult to control because you really have to have a great sales presentation, and be able to collect a huge email list, to make profit from paid advertising. Paid advertising can and does work, you just have to know what you are doing.
